Rainfall Continues to Affect Region
Rainfall in northwest MN and eastern ND continues to be the big
newsmaker. In the southern end of the Red River Valley, standing
water in fields continues to plague many locations as natural runoff
is hampered due to many drains and river channels already above
flood stage.
In the northern end of the valley and to areas east, the rainfall
has helped to recharge soil moisture that had been depleted due to
prevailing dry conditions that had the region classified as
abnormally dry to extreme drought as recently as March 27.
The precipitation has made field activities difficult in the
worst hit areas. Weed control by aerial application has been
necessary at many sites. Small grains are reaching the flag leaf to
heading stages and many producers will be making decisions on the
use of insecticides for the increasing aphid populations and/or
fungicides for disease management.

Doppler rainfall estimate for June 11 to June 18, 2007.
