Soybean Pests: the last round-up?
We are still hearing reports of Green Cloverworm in soybeans in
NW MN. Soybean aphid populations continue
to be tolerable in most fields. Keep monitoring.
Soybean Rust continues to spread in Texas and Oklahoma, but
any impact these infections could have on our region are becoming a
mute point.
Planning Ahead for Winter Wheat
Although some of the spring wheat crop is still in the field, it
is good to think ahead and explore the potential of seeding winter
wheat. If it survives the winter and spring cold, winter wheat has
an advantage of a longer growing season than spring wheat, because
it establishes in the fall and starts growth early in the spring.
Round
Hay Bale Storage
Although round baleage is becoming a popular method of
harvesting and storing forages for dairy and beef producers in our
area, dry round bales is still a common method of handling and
storing dry forages in northwestern Minnesota.
Using
Drought-Stressed Corn for Forage
Drought-stressed corn is prevalent in many areas of the state. Much
of this moisture stress occurred during the critical developmental
stages of pollination and early grain fill. In situations where
pollination success was marginal or kernel development is poor,
grain producers may be looking at using drought-stressed corn for
forage.
Governor Pawlenty Secures Agricultural Disaster Declaration
for Counties Impacted by Drought
Governor Tim Pawlenty received notice on August 7 from U.S.
Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns that 24 Minnesota counties
have been designated as federal agricultural disaster areas due this
summer’s drought.
