Preparing for fall grain
harvest: There may be multiple issues growers will face
during harvest that they are not accustomed to. A large corn crop,
delayed rail shipping, tight storage availability are only some of
the challenges in the next few weeks. Here are some items that may
be of interest and help as you begin harvest.
Hot and Dry Summer Conditions in Minnesota Are Favorable for
Corn Ear Rots and Mycotoxin Production
by Dean Malvick, U
of MN Extension Plant Pathologist
Not only have the hot and dry conditions and hail affected
corn yields in Minnesota this year, these conditions have also
favored development of ear rots. Reports of ear rots have been
coming in from several different areas, and the quality of grain
that comes off these affected fields may be reduced.
Grain Storage Tips: Factors
and Formulas for Crop Drying, Storage and Handling
by William Wilcke and Gary Wyatt,
U of MN Extension
For best success in storing grain: Clean grain to remove
chaff, weed seeds, and broken kernels; Handle grain gently
to minimize cracked and broken kernels; Store grain at the
recommended moisture; Aerate stored grain to maintain a
cool, uniform, recommended temperature; and, Check stored
grain frequently and take immediate action to eliminate
problems.
Corn Drying and Storage
by Dr. Ken Hellevang, NDSU Extension Ag Engineer
Dr. Hellevang presents in
this PowerPoint presentation an overview on how to prepare corn
for storage. With the large crop in the region, there may be new
corn growers who will have to face this issue for the first
time.
Ground Pile Design and Management
by Dr. Ken Hellevang, NDSU Extension Ag Engineer
Short-term storage may be a must for the
quanitiy of grain that is likely to be harvested and held for a
period of time this fall and winter. There are important
considerations if the need for outdoor grain piles arise such as
proper site preparation, use of retaining walls, grain placement
and condition, pile covers, aeration, management, and eventual
removal.

Buying and
Selling Hay
Many locations in central Minnesota are suffering from severe
drought this year. Though we’ve been quite dry in
areas of northwest MN, the overall hay production has been
quite good, leaving many farmers with hay
to sell. When selling hay there are a few
things to keep in mind to help make the transaction go smoothly.
First of all, it’s important to understand what the buyer wants or
needs.
