Section 18 Issued for Folicur to
control Fusarium Head Blight
On 27 May 2005, the EPA granted a
Section 18 specific exemption for the use of Folicur
(Bayer CropScience) on wheat and barley in Minnesota and
North Dakota to control Fusarium head blight. The
agency’s decision came four months after the application
was submitted for review. At issue was a special
local needs label allowing application of Tilt (Syngenta)
at heading (Feekes 10.5). Agency officials
determined that a comparison of the two products (Tilt vs.
Folicur) did not result in significant or economic
differences in disease control. Additional data and
information was submitted to the Agency by Minnesota and
North Dakota extension plant pathologists and the U.S.
Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative immediately prior to the
EPA’s decision to grant the Section 18.
Recommended application timing to control Fusarium head
blight is at the early-flowering growth stage (Feekes
10.51) for wheat and at early heading (Feekes 10.5) for
barley.
